Off-Highway Dump Trucks: Heavy Haulers Driving the Construction and Mining World

Off-highway dump trucks are specialized heavy-duty vehicles engineered for hauling large volumes of material over rugged, unpaved terrain. Unlike their on-road counterparts, these giants of the earthmoving industry are built to handle extreme loads, harsh conditions, and demanding productivity cycles, making them essential in mining, quarrying, and large-scale construction projects.

What Are Off-Highway Dump Trucks?

These trucks are purpose-built for off-road use, primarily for transporting heavy materials like ore, overburden, coal, or aggregates across short to medium distances within job sites. They come in various configurations and sizes, typically with:

  • Rigid frames or articulated bodies

  • Rear-wheel or all-wheel drive

  • Payload capacities ranging from 25 to over 400 tons

  • High-horsepower diesel engines to provide torque on steep grades

Types of Off-Highway Dump Trucks

  1. Rigid Dump Trucks

  • Feature a fixed chassis

  • Ideal for large-scale open-pit mining and long-distance hauls on well-maintained haul roads

  • Example: Caterpillar 797, Komatsu 960E

  1. Articulated Dump Trucks (ADTs)

  • Consist of a tractor and a trailer unit connected by a pivot

  • Excellent maneuverability on uneven or rough terrain

  • Commonly used in construction sites, small mines, and forestry
